Film Transfer
Somewhere, in a basement or
closet, hidden under an old blanket in a cardboard box lies the
recorded video history of your family. Sure, it's over 30
years old, incompatible with any type of video player you have in
your home. Even if you had the the equipment needed to view
it, would you know how? OK, so you have the film, projector
and knowledge to use it, pull the shades, get out the screen, gather
the family while you fumble with threading the film, adjusting the
focus and angling the projection...ooops, the bulb just went out.
Forget it, right? Wrong! It's there, you playing in the sprinkler, grandma holding your brother, Christmas 1968, your childhood friends, the house you grew-up in, the family cook-outs with relatives who are no longer with you. Today, you are on phone call away from moving these priceless memories from the archaic reel-to-reel film format to the 21st century.

You can bring those old memories back to
life by having them masterfully transferred to the superior, 100%
digital DVD
media. Here are just some of the benefits:

About Reel-to-Reel Film
To determine the cost of transferring your film to DVD, you will
have to be brought up-to-speed on the 'lengths and times of
reel-to-reel film'. It is common knowledge (never to be forgotten of
course), how many feet of your film will produce one running hour of
video. OK, maybe you've been busy since the 70's and it is
conceivable that this information has slipped your mind. Let
us help.
-
Reel-to-Reel film was traditionally spooled on a 3" reel
-
The standard 3" reel contains 50 feet of film
-
50 feet of film has an approximate running time of 3 & 30 seconds (actually, it would be abnormal if every 50-foot reel ran that long, but for estimation purposes, always assume the worst)
-
It was common to splice smaller reels together onto one large reel (see chart below for reel size to length information)
-
Most reels larger than 3" have markings on them that will tell you how many feet of film is on the reel, expect the total footage to increase in increments of 50 (i.e. 50 feet, 100 feet, 150 feet...etc.)
The Lengths And Times of Standard Reels
| Reel Size | Number of 50' Reels | Maximum Feet On Reel | Maximum Running Time (Approx.) |
| 3" | 1 | 50" | 3 min 30 sec |
| 4" | 2 | 100" | 7 min |
| 5" | 4 | 200" | 14 min |
| 6" | 6 | 300" | 21 minutes |
| 7" | 8 | 400" | 28 minutes |
After you have determined how many feet of film you have:
Video Transfer
Videotape...the dominate media
for two decades in home video use and still the prevailing champion
in all camcorder use. You would be hard-pressed to find a home
in America that does not have a videotape in it. While it
comes in many flavors (VHS, Betamax, Hi-8, VHS-C, Mini-DV,
Digital-8...etc.) the concept is the same: two fixed reels threaded
with an oxide-coated plastic tape housed in a self-contained case.
While videotape served its purpose, the digital age and DVD media
now give you a much better option.
So if you have:
Irreplaceable video
that you would like preserved
Video of an event
that you need several copies
An old video that
you would like converted to a more convenient modern media
Video on a media
that can not be viewed by friends or family because they do not
have the same equipment as you
Have several tapes
of footage that you would like transferred to one
Have footage that you would like edited, cleaned-up, added
titles or special effects

Why
Preservation?
Preservation is not
for every videotape you own, the process takes approximately six
times the actual running time of the original video to be
transferred. From initial transfer to MPEG conversion to final
DVD authoring, in almost all cases, it is cheaper to replace your
existing videotape with an existing ('Hollywood Produced') DVD if
possible. The videotape you want to preserve on DVD is the
irreplaceable video, your wedding, home videos, etc.
Why
Derogation?
Your videotape degrades over
time for several reasons:
